On August 2nd 1977 Ichiro Endo, development engineer at Canon, discovered the principal of thermic inkjet: The ink is heated, expands and flings inkdrops to the paper. Canon kept on working with this method and patented it under the name "BubbleJet". In the small format printers market segment Canon is one of the leading manufacturers. Meanwhile, Ichiro Endo is Chief Technology Officer at Canon and part of the executive board.

Canon also uses this technology with large format printers. In fall 2002 Canon introduced two new Inkjets: W7200 and W7250. One year later they were followed by the W8200 which has an effective print width of 1 metre. To the turn of year 2003/2004 Canon launched the W6200 which is only available with pigmentated ink.

A key advantage of this printing system is the printhead technology consisting of a narrow nozzle raster with a distance of 1/1200 inch. The printer therefore brings about a physical resolution of 1200 dpi. A total of 7680 color nozzles bring the information to paper by using only 8 picolitre fine inkdrops.
